The seven chakras

Each portrait belongs to one center. Beside it: the Solfeggio frequency, what the chakra is, five signs of a healthy gate, five signs of a closed one, how we bring it back, and the foods that feed it.

Muladhara

Chakra 1 · Red · Earth

Root

Muladhara · moo-LAH-dah-rah

The foundation. Muladhara is the earth of the body — survival, home, money, and the right to be here.

Muladhara, the root, sits at the base of the spine. It is the chakra of survival, tribe, and physical safety. When it is open, the nervous system can rest: you feel housed in your body, able to work, eat, sleep, and stand your ground. Sound healing begins here because a bowl cannot tune the upper centers if the body does not feel safe enough to receive vibration. We play 396 Hz and the low voice of a large bowl at the feet and sacrum so the earth of you remembers it is held.

The frequency

396 Hz is the Solfeggio tone of liberation — it is used to loosen guilt, fear, and the feeling of not belonging on the earth.

Location: Base of the spine, pelvic floor, legs, and feet. Seed sound: LAM.

A healthy root

  • You feel present in your body — feet on the floor, breath low in the belly, not floating above yourself.
  • Basic needs feel workable: food, rest, shelter, and money are engaged with rather than panicked over.
  • You can finish things. Follow-through, routines, and physical stamina are available.
  • Fear still visits, but it does not run the day. You recover after a scare.
  • You feel you belong somewhere — family, land, a room, a practice — and can take up space without apology.

When it is out of balance

  • Chronic anxiety, freeze, or a sense that the floor could drop at any moment.
  • Hoarding, overspending, or an inability to hold money and resources.
  • Disconnection from the body: numbness, collapse, or living only in the head.
  • Restlessness, inability to sit still, or feeling unwelcome in your own home.
  • Survival-mode thinking — everything is an emergency, even when it is not.

How to balance

  1. 1Sit or stand barefoot. Play 396 Hz (or a low singing bowl) at the feet for five to ten minutes and feel weight drop into the floor.
  2. 2Hold Prithvi Mudra while chanting LAM on a slow exhale.
  3. 3Eat regular, warm, cooked meals — especially root vegetables — and keep a simple sleep hour.
  4. 4Walk the same path daily. Repetition is medicine for this center.
  5. 5Practice Mountain Pose and a slow squat, breathing into the pelvic floor.

Practitioner seated on a dock at sunset, holding a bronze singing bowl beneath a glowing orange Svadhisthana sacral chakra symbol

417 Hz · VAM

Svadhisthana

Chakra 2 · Orange · Water

Sacral

Svadhisthana · svah-deesh-THAH-nah

The waters. Svadhisthana governs emotion, sensuality, creativity, and the ability to change shape without breaking.

Svadhisthana lives in the bowl of the pelvis. It is water: feeling, desire, play, and the art that comes when we are not braced. A healthy sacral center lets emotion move through like weather — arriving, raining, leaving — instead of damming up as numbness or flooding as drama. We play 417 Hz here, circling a mid-sized bowl around the hips, to remind the body it is allowed to feel and to create. This is the chakra of orange light, warm water, and a life that can still surprise you.

The frequency

417 Hz is the tone of change — it is used to dissolve old emotional weather and make room for a new current.

Location: Lower abdomen, hips, sacrum, and the creative organs. Seed sound: VAM.

A healthy sacral

  • Emotions move. You can cry, laugh, want, and then return to center.
  • Creativity has a pulse — cooking, music, making, play — without needing it to be perfect.
  • Pleasure is allowed in ordinary life: warm water, good food, touch, color, music.
  • You adapt when plans change instead of shattering.
  • Intimacy (with self or another) feels curious rather than threatening or compulsive.

When it is out of balance

  • Emotional numbness, or the opposite — moods that swamp the room.
  • Creative block: the sense that nothing wants to come through.
  • Guilt around desire, pleasure, or needing anything at all.
  • Rigid control of the body, or chaotic appetite and addiction loops.
  • Stuck hips, lower-back ache, and a life that has gone dry.

How to balance

  1. 1Play 417 Hz near the lower belly. Sway. Let the spine be a river, not a rod.
  2. 2Hold Varun Mudra and chant VAM, imagining warm orange water in the pelvis.
  3. 3Take a long bath or shower and bless the water the way Emoto taught — with thanks.
  4. 4Move the hips daily: figure-eights, cat-cow, a slow dance with no audience.
  5. 5Make something small with the hands — food, a sketch, a sound — without scoring it.

Foods that feed this center

  • Oranges & mangoes
  • Peaches, papaya, melon
  • Carrots & pumpkin
  • Sweet potato
  • Sesame & flax
  • Walnuts & coconut
  • Cinnamon & vanilla
  • Plenty of water

Mudra

Varun Mudra

Restores emotional fluidity, hydration of the tissues, and a kinder relationship with desire.

Practitioner seated on a dock at golden hour, holding a yellow singing bowl beneath a glowing Manipura solar plexus symbol

528 Hz · RAM

Manipura

Chakra 3 · Yellow · Fire

Solar Plexus

Manipura · mah-nee-POOR-ah

The inner sun. Manipura is personal power, digestion, and the courage to act on what you know.

Manipura is the jewel in the city of gems — the solar plexus. It is fire: metabolism, will, boundaries, and the warmth that lets you say yes and no without collapsing. When this center is balanced, you can take up a task and finish it; you can be seen; digestion (of food and of life) works. 528 Hz is the frequency we bring here. A singing bowl at the upper belly is not about forcing confidence — it is about remembering you already have a sun, and it does not need anyone else's permission to shine.

The frequency

528 Hz is called the miracle tone — transformation, repair, and the return of personal fire. We use it to warm the will.

Location: Upper abdomen, diaphragm, and the solar plexus. Seed sound: RAM.

A healthy solar plexus

  • You can make a decision and live with it, even when it is imperfect.
  • Boundaries are clean: you can say no without a speech, and yes without a debt.
  • Energy is available for work and play; digestion is steady.
  • You take responsibility without turning every mistake into a character flaw.
  • Confidence is quiet. You do not need to dominate the room to know you are in it.

When it is out of balance

  • Collapsed will — people-pleasing, freeze, or waiting to be chosen.
  • The other pole: control, rage, or a need to win every exchange.
  • Shame that sits in the gut. A sense of being small, or of having to perform bigness.
  • Digestive fire too high or too low — bloating, reflux, or no appetite.
  • Procrastination dressed as perfectionism. The work never leaves the dock.

How to balance

  1. 1Play 528 Hz at the solar plexus. Sit in sunlight if you can. Breathe into the upper belly.
  2. 2Hold Rudra Mudra and chant RAM as a warm, bright syllable.
  3. 3Take a short, honest action you have been postponing — one email, one walk, one boundary.
  4. 4Eat yellow, warming foods. Ginger tea before a task that scares you.
  5. 5Practice Boat Pose or a twist to stoke the navel fire without strain.

Foods that feed this center

  • Ginger & turmeric
  • Lemons & pineapple
  • Bananas & corn
  • Yellow squash
  • Oats & brown rice
  • Chickpeas & lentils
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Fennel & mint

Mudra

Rudra Mudra

Practitioner seated on a dock at sunset, holding a green singing bowl beneath a glowing Anahata heart chakra symbol

639 Hz · YAM

Anahata

Chakra 4 · Green · Air

Heart

Anahata · ah-nah-HAH-tah

The unstruck sound. Anahata is compassion, grief, gratitude, and the courage to stay open.

Anahata means the unstruck — the sound that exists before two things collide. The heart chakra is air: breath, space, relationship. It is where we give and receive, forgive, and let ourselves be moved. A balanced heart is not endless softness; it is a gate that can open and close with wisdom. We play 639 Hz here, a bowl resting on or just in front of the sternum, so the ribcage remembers it is a cage that is allowed to breathe. Green is the color of this center because love, like a forest, repairs itself when it is given time and air.

The frequency

639 Hz is the frequency of connection — it is used to restore harmony in relationships, including the one with yourself.

Location: Center of the chest, lungs, arms, and the space of the heart. Seed sound: YAM.

A healthy heart

  • You can give without disappearing, and receive without keeping score.
  • Grief is allowed to move through. You do not skip it or build a house in it.
  • Forgiveness is possible — not as a performance, but as a loosening.
  • Breath is full. The chest is not armored. A deep inhale feels available.
  • You feel connected: to people, to animals, to the living world, to your own chest.

When it is out of balance

  • Isolation dressed as independence, or clinging dressed as love.
  • Jealousy, bitterness, or a ledger of old wounds you cannot put down.
  • Codependency: other people's weather becomes your only climate.
  • An armored chest, shallow breath, or a heart that will not let anyone near.
  • Compassion fatigue — giving until there is no one left at home.

How to balance

  1. 1Play 639 Hz at the sternum. Place a hand on the chest. Let the exhale be longer than the inhale.
  2. 2Hold Padma (lotus) Mudra at the heart and chant YAM.
  3. 3Practice a heart opener — Bridge, Cobra, or a simple supported backbend.
  4. 4Eat green foods. Sit under a tree. Write a letter you may never send.
  5. 5Offer one true kindness and receive one, even if receiving is the harder yoga.

Foods that feed this center

  • Kale, spinach, chard
  • Broccoli & green beans
  • Avocado & kiwi
  • Green apples & cucumber
  • Matcha & green tea
  • Basil, parsley, rosemary
  • Pistachio & lime
  • Zucchini

Practitioner seated on a dock at sunset, holding a blue singing bowl beneath a glowing Vishuddha throat chakra symbol

741 Hz · HAM

Vishuddha

Chakra 5 · Blue · Ether

Throat

Vishuddha · vee-SHOO-dah

The purification center. Vishuddha is authentic speech, listening, and the courage to sound like yourself.

Vishuddha lives in the throat — the narrow gate between heart and mind. It is ether: space, sound, and the word. When it is clear, you can tell the truth without a weapon, and you can hear without preparing your reply. Singing bowls are this chakra's native language. We play 741 Hz here, sometimes holding the bowl just below the chin so the vibration moves through the voice box. A sound healer who will not speak honestly cannot play honestly. This center asks: what wants to be said, and what wants to be heard?

The frequency

741 Hz is the tone of expression and clean solving — it is used to clear the channel so truth can move.

Location: Throat, neck, jaw, mouth, and the ears. Seed sound: HAM.

A healthy throat

  • You say what you mean, at a volume that fits the room.
  • You can be silent without disappearing, and speak without performing.
  • Listening is real — you can be changed by what another person says.
  • Creative voice (song, writing, teaching) has a clear channel.
  • The jaw, neck, and thyroid area feel unbraced. Swallowing and breath are easy.

When it is out of balance

  • Fear of speaking, a swallowed life, or a voice that goes thin under pressure.
  • The other pole: talking over, gossip, or using words as a blade.
  • Inability to listen. Every conversation is a stage.
  • Sore throat, tight jaw, chronic cough, or a lump that is not medical — a held word.
  • Dishonesty by omission. The truth is known and never leaves the mouth.

How to balance

  1. 1Play 741 Hz at the throat. Hum on the exhale until the lips buzz.
  2. 2Hold Granthita Mudra and chant HAM, letting the sound live in the mouth.
  3. 3Speak one true sentence you have been holding. Write if the voice is not ready.
  4. 4Drink warm herbal tea. Soften the jaw. Stretch the neck slowly.
  5. 5Practice Lion's Breath or a supported Fish Pose to open the front of the throat.

Foods that feed this center

  • Blueberries & blackberries
  • Pears & plums
  • Coconut water
  • Peppermint & chamomile tea
  • Honey & ginger
  • Citrus
  • Figs
  • Broths & soups

Mudra

Granthita Mudra

Unties the knots in speech, steadies the voice, and makes listening possible again.

Practitioner seated on a dock under a twilight sky, holding an indigo singing bowl beneath a glowing Ajna third-eye symbol

852 Hz · OM

Ajna

Chakra 6 · Indigo · Light

Third Eye

Ajna · AH-nyah

The command center. Ajna is intuition, imagination, and the ability to see pattern without getting lost in it.

Ajna means to perceive, to command. It sits between the eyebrows, in the quiet behind the eyes. This is not fortune-telling. It is the capacity to see what is actually happening — in a room, in a body, in a life — before the mind writes a story over it. When Ajna is clear, dreams are useful, memory is kind, and you can hold a vision without gripping. We play 852 Hz here, a smaller bowl at the brow, often with the eyes closed. Indigo is the color of dusk: enough light to see, enough dark to know.

The frequency

852 Hz is the tone of inner order — it is used to clear confusion and return vision to the one who is looking.

Location: The brow, between the eyebrows, and the cave of the mind. Seed sound: OM.

A healthy third eye

  • Intuition lands as a quiet yes/no in the body, not as noise.
  • You can imagine a future without leaving the present.
  • Sleep and dreaming feel restorative. Night is not an enemy.
  • You see pattern — in your own habits, in other people — without turning it into judgment.
  • The mind can focus. Visualization, study, and prayer have a still point.

When it is out of balance

  • Confusion, fog, or a mind that will not stop rehearsing.
  • Nightmares, insomnia, or living entirely in fantasy.
  • Denial: the thing is obvious and still cannot be looked at.
  • Headaches at the brow, eye strain, or a sense of being watched from inside.
  • Over-identification with thought. You are the weather report, not the sky.

How to balance

  1. 1Play 852 Hz at the brow. Eyes closed. Gaze inward toward the root of the nose.
  2. 2Hold Hakini Mudra and sound a long OM, feeling it in the skull.
  3. 3Limit late light. Step outside at dusk. Let the eyes rest on one distant point.
  4. 4Eat deep purple foods. A square of dark chocolate, slowly, can be a ritual.
  5. 5Practice Child's Pose or a forward fold so the forehead can meet the earth.

Foods that feed this center

  • Purple grapes & blueberries
  • Eggplant & purple cabbage
  • Dark chocolate
  • Walnuts
  • Sage & lavender tea
  • Flax & omega-rich seeds
  • Goji berries
  • Star anise

Practitioner seated on a dock under a violet starfield, holding a purple singing bowl beneath a glowing Sahasrara crown chakra lotus

963 Hz · Silence · OM

Sahasrara

Chakra 7 · Violet · Consciousness

Crown

Sahasrara · sah-has-RAH-rah

The thousand-petaled lotus. Sahasrara is meaning, prayer, and the part of you that was never broken.

Sahasrara opens at the crown, where the body meets what is larger than the body. It is not an escape from life — it is the sky that makes the landscape possible. When the crown is in balance, there is a sense of purpose that does not have to be explained, and a peace that does not depend on the news. We play 963 Hz here, a high, thin bowl above the head, and then we stop. The last medicine of sound healing is silence. After the water has been spoken to, after the crystal has formed, there is only listening.

The frequency

963 Hz is the frequency of oneness — it is used to remember the quiet above thought, the thousand-petaled lotus.

Location: Crown of the head, the space just above the skull. Seed sound: Silence · OM.

A healthy crown

  • A quiet sense of meaning — not a slogan, a felt orientation.
  • Prayer, meditation, or wonder is available without forcing belief.
  • You can be alone without being abandoned, and with others without being lost.
  • Cynicism does not win. Mystery is allowed to stay mysterious.
  • The nervous system can rest in stillness. Silence is nourishing, not empty.

When it is out of balance

  • Spiritual bypass: using light-language to avoid the root, the bills, the grief.
  • The other pole: hard materialism, mockery of anything unseen.
  • Disconnection, depression, or a life that has lost its why.
  • Headiness — living above the body, insomnia, or dissociation dressed as awakening.
  • Loneliness at the top: no one else is real, including yourself.

How to balance

  1. 1Play 963 Hz above the crown, then sit in the silence that follows for at least as long as the tone.
  2. 2Hold Dhyana Mudra. Let OM dissolve into no-sound.
  3. 3Rest in Savasana or a simple seated meditation. The pose is the practice.
  4. 4Eat lightly. Drink clean water. Bless it. This is Emoto's teaching, lived.
  5. 5Walk at dawn or dusk. Look at the sky more than the phone.

Foods that feed this center

  • Pure water
  • Tulsi (holy basil) tea
  • Grapes
  • Ginger & jasmine tea
  • Cauliflower & garlic
  • Coconut
  • Raw greens, when they agree
  • Occasional fasting
